Disaster Management

Any incident which can cause damage to life, property and environment may be termed as ‘disaster’. The disaster may be natural or manmade. Disaster management is related to reduce, the level of damage; caused by the disaster.

Natural disasters cannot be stopped by man. These disasters come in the form of floods, cyclones, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, etc. Though ‘we can make efforts to reduce the harm caused by natural calamity. The governments of Common Wealth nations emphasized on the four facts about the management related to the disaster. These four measures are pre-preparation, action plan, and reestablishment and control plan.

Hundred percent check on natural incidents is not possible. In this regard, there is a need to study the causes of natural actions seriously. Most of them are influenced little or more by human activities. For example, deforestation leads to the flood in rivers. The loss of lives and property because of earthquakes is directly related to the number of storeys build up, type of soil on which they are built and type of construction.

The disasters caused due to human activities like stampedes. Fires, transport accidents, industrial accidents, terrorist attacks, etc. Man has very frequently created catastrophes that devastate the environment a take lives. The nuclear power plant explosion in Chernobyl Russia, Union Carbide gas leak at Bhopal, the terrorist attacks at Mumbai and Peshawar are just a few examples of many more man-made disasters.

The action taken in response to a man-made disaster goes along to cushion people from the after-effects of such mishaps. The best way to deal with the situation is by placing the necessary measures in place the counteract this. India has the National Disaster Management Authority whose Chairman is Shri Narendra Modi. The Authority has effectively studied the vulnerable areas in the country. It has proactive prevention mitigation and preparedness — driven approach for minimising loss life, livelihood and property.
