T-20: Hits a Six in Entertainment

Cricket unquestionably is the most cherished sport in India. The magnitude of the love of Indians for cricket is as strong as its feverish intensity which is evident from the fact that TV rights for the biggest audience in the world have made BCCI the richest cricket board. A famous sportsman once quoted: “Cricket is a religion in India”. If that is deemed true, then the religion of cricket has no holy books but several Gods. ‘Men in blue’ are absolutely adored by crazy cricket fans and their fame outshines the popularity of any other celebrity.

 A comparatively recent format and shorter version of the game, zo-zo cricket has pierced in like a bullet of quick entertainment. India’s dramatic win in T-20 World Cup against Pakistan in 2007 generated untold furore and the viewership of the entire tournament sky-rocketed. The sensational Indian Premier League or IPL has also emanated from the T-20 concept. For viewers, the T-20 or IPL is a three and a half-hour live reality show on TV where salaries matter, auctions matter, entertainment is key and everything is reduced to fours and sixes.

 The inclusion of Bollywood stars in the game has definitely notched up its glamour quotient Cheerleaders, king-sized sponsors, enthralling performances by movie stars; the much-hyped auctions have made T-20 cricket a feast for the viewers back at home and those thronging the stadium. Not only that, but T-20 has added more wealth to the Indian cricket which is already an overflowing river of gold and deepened the pockets of the players.

 Indeed, the one-dayers and test cricket have taken a backseat post the arrival of 20-20. In the fast-paced lifestyle that people lead today, who would want to watch the five-day game or an eight-hour game when a more thrilling three-hour version is present.

 However, all that blinding glamour and commercialisation have eclipsed the spirit of the game. For a player, test cricket is the real test of his calibre and the zo-zo format is more of his earning source. At the same time, with the over-commercialisation of cricket, other sports have been receiving a step-motherly treatment. As all the funds are being channelised into one sport, other games have failed to grow and prosper.

 Thus, the ICC, BCCI and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports should ensure that the spirit of the game should not be dimmed by the fast commercialisation of the sport. And at the same time, the other sports of the country should not be overlooked but be allowed to prosper by laying equal emphasis on them.
