The trek was tiring. Karan and his friends climbed on till noon. On reaching the camp they realised that Vishnu was not with them. Nobody had noticed it until they reached the base-camp. Enquiries revealed that he was last seen at the KhooniNalla, a place notorious for accidents. Vishnu was not a seasoned and experienced climber as Karan and some of his friends were. But he seemed to be of an independent mind. He refused to follow them. He had assured that he would meet them at the base-camp safe and sound. It was three in the afternoon. They had finished their lunch but Vishnu was nowhere to be seen. They were a little worried now. Karen, their team leader, immediately organised two search parties. There could be two possible dangers. The terrain was very deceptive. The soft and fresh snow could be a deadly trap. One wrong step could have thrown a man hundreds of feet below in a ditch. Of course, there were some black bears in the forests at lower heights. But Vishnu was a dare-devil and was trained on how to keep a bear at bay during an encounter. Their real worry was the weather. A snowstorm that they braved the way posed a real challenge. They were able to weather the storm. They shuddered to think Vishnu being trapped in the snow-storm. After an intensive search for an hour, the advance party could see a man struggling to come out of the snow. He was half-buried in snow. The message was flashed to the second party. The rescue operation started. Luckily, he was still alive but totally exhausted. He was safely taken out, put on a stretcher and brought to the camp. He was immediately admitted to the city hospital where he was discharged after a week.
