Ans.                                                                           POOR CAT

Sruthi heard a mewing sound outside the door. On opening the door she saw a small cat drenched in the rain. The poor cat mewed again. It was natural that she was expecting Sruthi to be more compassionate. Her low mewings were in the form of repeated requests. It was a pathetic sight. Should she allow the cat in and let her enjoy a few hours in the dry corners of the house? Her education and bringing up urged her to show compassion to the helpless and needy. It didn’t matter if it was a cat or a human child. Then she realised that she was growing over-sentimental. Could she allow a beggar drenched in the rain enter her house? Perhaps not. The cat made no attempt to make a forced entry. Perhaps she had not lost hope in Sruthi’s generosity. Suddenly, she opened the gate wide and stood aside. The cat suddenly entered and disappeared somewhere in some invisible corner of the house. Then she realised that animals attract our compassion and pity more easily than human beings. Certainly, Sruthi wouldn’t have allowed a stranger to enter the house even when he was drenched to the bones. Why did she allow a cat instead? Anyway, she forgot about the incident and wants to sleep. In the morning, she saw an incredible sight taking place in the right-hand corner of the garden. The cat was tearing the head of a black snake with her long and sharp nails. The snake was struggling to escape from her clutches but in vain. Soon it lay motionless on the ground. It was dead. Sruthi looked at the cat. The cat simply mewed lowly. Sruthi realised that the compassion shown to the drenched cat the previous evening was duly rewarded. The cat appeared as a good angel to save the members of the house from a snake bite. Sruthi looked upwards and thanked God for being ‘merciful’ and compassionate.
