The Indian society is getting increasingly westernized and drinking is considered a sign of higher social status and of social advancement. With the spread of education. drinking has become a fashion among an increasing number of people, particularly the youth.
Rapid industrialization of the country has expended the industrial labour force in cities, which has taken to drinking, partly out of fashion and party in order to relax after the day’s fatigue.
Government measure to clamp prohibition has been half-hearted. They have lacked will. Faith and commitment. The approach has really been paradoxical. While on the one hand. The Government has been standing by prohibition, on the other hand, it has been granting licences for more and more liquor shops. The opening of liquor shops in new placed bring into drunkard’s fold another person previously abstaining from drink. The accumulation of black money with the people has encouraged drinking and drug consuming.
The present age has brought in its wake tension galore. Aspirations are not fulfilled; ambitions are dashed down to the ground. The frustrated youths in India took to liquor. Broken families unemployment and complexities of the modern age created widespread unrest and frustration amongst the youth. Most young men and women started taking liquor for pleasure. But soon they got used to it. Addiction leads of completed degeneration of man, physically and spiritually. The government and other voluntary organization should work hand in hand to root out this abuse among the youth of India.
