It helps by facilitating investigations and screening for confirming the hospitalization of patients. It also controls diseases by diagnosing the illnesses and giving treatment on time. It provides training facilities for nursing, paramedical and medical staff. It also offers a venue for social and epidemiology research.

An OPD is usually on the ground floor of a hospital and consist of a clinical lab, which includes the centralized area for collecting samples of blood, stool, and urine; toilets and washrooms, and a routine exam room that is adjacent to the centralized collection area. It also has a pharmacy that serves the inpatients as well as the OPD patients. The outpatient departments provide diagnostic services like microbiology, pathology, radiology, etc. It may also include sample collection points.

The specialized services that are provided by an OPD include gastrointestinal endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy. The OPD has (gentle) sloping ramps at the main entrance that helps by facilitating the movement. The majority of these departments have a double door that has a width of fifteen hundred millimetres. Wheelchairs are always available at the entrance section of this department. The entrance points for patient and staff are separate. Also, the parking area is generally close to the entrance areas.

The outpatient departments consist of four main organizational components, which include the medical staff, ancillary staff, nursing staff and clerical staff. The medical staff is the most important part of the organization. The ancillary staff usually works as the ECG, laboratory, and radiology technicians. The nursing staff consists of registered nurses, hospital or nursing aides and ANMs. The clerical staff engages in functions related to medical and secretarial records, receiving cash, billing, and registration.
