CRT — Cathode Ray Tube

CRT Full-Form stands for Cathode Ray Tube. CRT is an electron tube that has a phosphorescent screen and an electron gun(s). It is utilized for displaying images. It uses the deflection, acceleration, and modulation of one or more electron beam on the screen for creating images. These images can be represented in different forms in accordance with the devices. For example, in the oscilloscope, the image is represented in the form of electrical waveforms. In computer monitor and televisions, they are represented as pictures.

Sometimes, CRTs are also used as Williams—Kilburn tube. In this case, the fluorescent material emits the visible light; however, it is not significant to any visual observer. The visible pattern present on the face of the tube can represent the data stored in it cryptically. An evacuated envelope made of glass is used by a CRT. This envelope is fragile, heavy, deep and large. A thick crystal is used for making the face for safety purposes. The crystal used is highly resistant to shattering and has the capability of blocking the majority of the X-ray emissions. This holds particularly true when a CRT is utilized in any consumer goods.

Due to advancements in the technology of display screens, OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode), plasma display and LCD (liquid crystal display) are being used instead of CRT since the year 2000. The new display technologies consume less power and have a lower cost of manufacture.

They are also less bulky and have less weight. These technologies can be manufactured in large displays, like in fifty or sixty-inch displays. CRT TV’s largest size was thirty-eight to forty inches.

There are many health concerns related to CRTs. The cathode ray tube can emit X-ray radiations in small amounts; however, this amount is not harmful. The older monochrome and colour CRTs possible has cadmium and other toxic substances in the phosphors. The modern cathode-ray tubes’ glass tube can be manufactured using leaded glass. This leads to disposing problems and is, therefore, a hazard to the environment.
