LL.M. is a master degree in law which is commonly known as “Master of Laws”. LL.M. is an acronym which means “Legum Magister” in Latin. A candidate is eligible to pursue Masters in Law only if he is holding an undergraduate academic law degree, or a professional law degree, or an undergraduate degree in a related subject. In a few jurisdictions, the “Master of Laws” is the basic professional degree for admission into legal practice.

LLM is a postgraduate degree program that is pursued by those who have completed an undergraduate law degree program or an undergraduate degree program in a related subject. In India, LLM is regarded as an important degree program, though it is not mandatory for a person who wishes to practice as a lawyer. Historically, an LLM degree is an element commonly found in English-speaking nations and is based on the differentiation between the Master’s and Bachelor’s degree. Over the last decade, LLM programs have become extensively popular, especially where the Bologna process is not fully enforced. In countries such as Norway, Cyprus, Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark, LLM is a must in order to become a lawyer. As of the year 2014, Spain requires an LLM degree apart from a four years’ degree in order to become a lawyer. In Finland, an LLM degree is regarded as a standard degree mandatory for practicing law.
