The foundation of the BEMs was laid by the first Prime Minister of the country, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the basis of the recommendations of the Planning Commission. BEMs are societies registered to vide the Indian Societies Registration Act. Every BEM exercises autonomous control over its administrative functions, although core issues pertaining to these institutes are decided in the IIM Council.

These institutes are called elite business schools of the world since they secure some of the best placements in the country and have an extensive, global alumni base. The acronym BEM stands for the Indian Institute of Management. The flagship programme in all the IIMs is the Post Graduate Programme in Management (abbreviated as PGDM) which is a two-year programme. These PGDMs are regarded as equivalent to any regular Master of Business Administration (abbreviated as MBA) programme. A few BEMs also provide a one-year-long PGDM for those graduates who have more working experience.

Some IIMs provide the Fellow Programme in Management (abbreviated as FPM), which is essentially a doctoral programme. The FPM is regarded as equivalent to PhD. Apart from these courses, IIMs also provide short-term courses and part-time programmes. The admission process in BEM is difficult since students have to go through one of the most difficult entrance examinations in the world, Common Admission Test (abbreviated as CAT) whose scores are a main short-listing criterion for the purposes of admissions. International students are given the option to apply on the basis of the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (abbreviated as GMAT). Those who qualify the entrance examination are subjected to a rigorous interview. Those who make it through the interview round are allotted BEMs accordingly.
