ICSE Full-Form | What is Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)

ICSE Full-Form refers to the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education. ICSE refers to an examination that is organized by the Council of the Indian School Certificate Examinations (abbreviated as CISCE), which is a non-governmental board of school education functional in India. The ICSE is organized for class 10th students. The examination is conducted on the lines of the recommendations contained in the New Education Policy 1986, through English medium. Before the year 1986, it has affiliations to the French Board of Examination. The examination enables the suitable representation of various governments responsible for school in their territories or states. Private candidates are not allowed to appear in this examination.

The subjects covered in ICSE are categorized into three groups, namely: Group I which includes Compulsory subjects that are English, Indian language, Geography, and History & Civics; Group II which covers any two from Science (Chemistry, Biology, and Physics) and Mathematics, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Commercial Studies, a foreign language, Agricultural Science, Economics, a classical language, and Technical Drawing; and Group BI covers anyone from Economic Applications, Computer Applications, Art, Home Science, Performing Arts, Cookery, Physical Education, Yoga, Environmental Applications, Yoga, Fashion designing and Technical Drawing Applications.

All the subjects covered have internal assessments which are conducted by schools on the basis of project work/assignment, coursework or practical. There is 20 per cent weight given to internal assessment in groups I & II and 50 per cent weight in Group BI. In those subjects where there remains more than one paper such as Science, the marks secured in the subject are evaluated by calculating the average of all papers in that subject. Candidates who appear for this examination study 6 subjects with one to three papers in every subject.

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) is an examination conducted by the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) which is a private, non- governmental board of school education in India for class 10.Subjects – The subjects are divided into two groups – Group 1 & Group 2

Group 1 – These are compulsory subjects which have to be followed by all the schools which are affiliated to ICSE board. List of these subjects is as follows:

  1. English (which includes Paper1 and Paper2)
  2. Indian Language (Varies from state to state as it depends on the regional language of the state)

  4. History and Civics
  5. Geography
