Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is a power plant equipment manufacturer. BHEL is an organisation owned by the Government of India. BHEL operates as an engineering and manufacturing company based in New Delhi, India. BHEL has been established in 1964. It has marked itself as India’s largest engineering and manufacturing of its kind in the domain. BHEL started earning profits from the year 1971 and has paid dividends to its stakeholders in an interrupted fashion from 1976.

History of BHEL

When it comes to the year of establishment, BHEL was established in the year 1964. In 1974, Heavy Electrical (India) Ltd was merged with BHEL. To reduce its dependence on the power sector, BHEL entered into power equipment in the year 1982. After this, it developed the capability to produce a variety of electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment for all sectors. The different sectors include transmission, transportation, oil and gas and other allied industries.

Conversion into a Public Limited Company â€“ BHEL got converted into a Public Limited Company in the year 1991.

Operations of BHEL

BHEL is engaged in the design, engineering, manufacture, construction, testing, commissioning and servicing of a wide range of products, systems and services for the core sectors of the economy which are Power, Transmission, Industry, Transportation, Renewable Energy, Oil, Gas and Defence.

BHEL has a widespread network of 17 manufacturing units, two repair units, four regional offices, eight service centres, eight overseas offices, 15 regional centres, seven joint ventures, and infrastructure to execute more than 150 project sites across India and abroad. With such a huge network, BHEL provides products, systems and services to customers efficiently and at competitive prices. BHEL as a company has established the capability to deliver 20,000 MW p.a. of power equipment to address the growing demand for the equipment required to generate power.

In spite of operating in a difficult business environment, BHEL retained its market leadership position during 2013-2014 with a 72% market share in the Power sector. BHEL recorded the highest ever commissioning/synchronization of 13,452 MW of power plants in domestic and international markets in 2013-14 by improving focus on project execution. This marked an increase of 30% during 2012-2013. So far, BHEL has added more than 124,000 MW to the country’s power generating capacity.

Besides these, it is also into the export business. It has been exporting its power and industry segment products and services for over 40 years to more than 76 countries across all the six continents of the world. When it comes to the cumulative overseas installed capacity of BHEL manufactured power plants, it exceeds 9,000 MW across 21 countries. The countries include Malaysia, Oman, Iraq, the UAE, Bhutan, Egypt and New Zealand. BHEL involves itself in delivering turnkey projects to services after-sales.
