This is the story of an old woman aged 62 who desired to start learning to read and write. Her 12 years old granddaughter was her teacher. The teaching and learning were completed well and now the granddaughter is telling us about the whole episode.
The name of the granddaughter is Sudha Murty. She is telling us about the time when she was 12 years old and she used to stay with her grandparents in a village in north Karnataka. Her grandma could not study well because of a lot of responsibilities of her life. A major part of her life was spent looking after the family. Unfortunately, She remained uneducated.

The writer Sudha Murty tells how she taught her grandmother to read. Actually, Grandmother was fond of a story, Kashi Yatre, which was a novel that was printed in the magazine. The name of the Magazine was Karamveera. Unfortunately, grandma could not read that story so she asked others to read the story for her. But when Sudha Murty was with her she used to read that story to her grandmother.
Once, the narrator went for a week to a neighbouring village to attend a wedding. Grandmother had no one to read that week’s episode.
At that time grandma realized how dependent she was on- others. She realized the importance of literacy and independence which is gained using education. When the granddaughter came back the grandma named Kristikka asked her to teach her how to read.
The grandma was 62 years old then. The narrator tells that she laughed in the beginning at the idea of a sixty-two-year-old and grey-haired lady trying to learn to read but soon she understood that it was really praiseworthy that her grandma wanted to learn.
She started to teach her grandmother. Grandma set a deadline for herself. It was the festival of Dassara. She vowed that she would hold a pooja dedicated to Saraswati, the Goddess of learning.
She achieved her target. On the Pooja day, the grandma was able to read on her own. She gifted her granddaughter a frock material. As a mark of gratitude and respect, she touched the feet of her twelve-year-old teacher.
The Child was shocked at what her grandma was doing. She also touched her grandmother’s feet and gifted her ‘Kashi Yatre’ which by this time had been published as a novel. The grandmother read out the title of the book, the writer’s name, and the publisher’s name without any mistakes. This gave ‘the teacher’ a lot of joy because her student had passed with flying colours.

यह 62 साल की एक बूढ़ी औरत की कहानी है जो पढ़ना और लिखना सीखना शुरू करना चाहती थी। उसने अपनी 12 साल की पोती अपनी शिक्षिका बनाया | पठन-पाठन शुरू किया गया और अच्छी तरह से संपन्न भी हुआ और अब पोती हमें पूरे प्रकरण के बारे में बता रही है।
पोती का नाम सुधा मूर्ति है। वह हमें उस समय के बारे में बता रही हैं जब वह 12 साल की थीं और उत्तरी कर्नाटक के एक गांव में अपने दादा-दादी के साथ रहती थीं। बात कुछ ऐसी थी कि जीवन की बहुत सारी जिम्मेदारियों के कारण उनकी दादी अच्छी तरह से पढ़ाई नहीं कर पाई थीं । उनके जीवन का एक बड़ा हिस्सा परिवार की देखभाल में व्यतीत हुआ। दुर्भाग्य से, वह अशिक्षित रही।

उस समय दादी को एहसास हुआ कि वह दूसरों पर कितनी निर्भर थीं । उन्होंने साक्षरता और स्वतंत्रता के महत्व को महसूस किया और उन्होंने पढ़ाई करने का निश्चय किया । जब पोती वापस आई तो दादी ने उनसे अपनी पोती के सामने अपनी इक्षा जाहिर की और उनसे अपनी पोती से कहा की वह पढना लिखना सीखना चाहती थीं।
उस समय दादी 62 साल की थीं। सुधा मूर्ती बताती हैं कि जब उन्होंने अपनी दादी को पढ़ाने की बात सुनि तो शुरुआत में उन्हें हंसी आ गई. लेकिन जल्द ही वह समझ गई कि यह वास्तव में प्रशंसनीय है कि उसकी दादी सीखना चाहती थी।

Time kept passing and the responsibilities were no doubt reduced but the lady remained uneducated. Now the Grandmother whose name is Kristikka is very much fond of a novel named Kashi Yatre. उपन्यास में दादी माँ की इतनी दिलचस्पी होने का एक और कारण यह था कि लेखिका त्रिवेणी जिन्होंने कशी यात्रे लिखा था उनकी भाषा बहुत ही सरल थी और वे आम लोगों और उनकी दिन-प्रतिदिन की समस्याओं के बारे में लिखा करती थीं ।
During those days the transport system was not all that good, so the morning newspaper reached the village by afternoon and the weekly magazines arrived one day late.
उन दिनों परिवहन व्यवस्था इतनी अच्छी नहीं थी, इसलिए सुबह का अखबार गांव में दोपहर तक पहुंच जाता था और साप्ताहिक पत्रिकाएं एक दिन देरी से पहुंचती थीं।
Sudha’s grandmother followed the story very regularly. Every Wednesday when the weekly magazine arrived she made her granddaughter read out the episode to her. She would then discuss the story with her friends in the temple courtyard. It was then followed by a great debate.

Once the granddaughter means Sudha Murty went for a wedding in a neighbouring village with her cousins. Though she had gone there for just two days, she enjoyed herself so much in this village that she ended up staying there for a week.

She was very restless to know what would happen next in the story the grandmother ran her fingers all over the pages to know what was written on them. But of course, it was useless. She could not understand anything.
इतने में बुधवार को साप्ताहिक पत्रिका ‘कर्मवीरा’ आ गई पर दादी को कहानी का नया प्रसंग पढ़कर सुनाने वाला कोई नहीं था। कहानी में आगे क्या होगा यह जानने के लिए वह बहुत बेचैन थीं । दादी जी पत्रिका के पन्नों पर अपनी उंगलियाँ रगडती रहीं लेकिन जाहिर है, यह बेकार था. उसे कुछ समझ नहीं आ रहा था।
Also, the lady did not ask anyone to read that for her because it would be somewhat insulting to the grandmother. she was a very sensitive lady that’s why she also didn’t go to the neigbouring village to ask her granddaughter to read it to her.
साथ ही, दादी जी ने किसी को भी उसे पढ़ने के लिए नहीं कहा क्योंकि यह दादी के लिए यह कुछ हद तक अपमानजनक लगता। वह बहुत ही संवेदनशील महिला थीं इसलिए वह अपनी पोती को पढ़ने के लिए कहने के लिए पड़ोस के गांव भी नहीं गईं।
The grandma, Kristikka felt so helpless and dependent that she regretted her luck that she could not get a chance to study. Now she did not repent for long but she decided to start her study at the age of 62.

When the granddaughter Sudha Murty came back from the neighbouring village, she saw that her grandmother was in tears. On asking what the matter was, the grandma didn’t answer. Later, in the middle of the night, she came to her grandchild and told her that she was sad about not being able to read the novel on her own.
