Rules for Changing Assertive/Statements

EXERCISE – 5

Put the following sentences into indirect speech:

1. My father said to me, “Study for at least six hours daily if you wish to get the first division.”

2. The captain said to the soldiers, “Be ready for action.”

3. He said to me, “Get out of my way.”

4. The teacher said to the students, “Make good use of your time.”

5. My father advised me, “Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.”

6. “Take four capsules a day,” my doctor told me.

7. My father said to me, “Don’t say anything to make her angry.”

8. “Don’t put so many things in your pockets,” said my mother to me.

9. “Follow that car,” the policeman said to the taxi-driver.

10. “Waiter, bring four sandwiches,” said Mohan.




ANSWERS:

1. My father advised me to study at least six hours if I wished to get the first division.

2. The captain ordered the soldiers to be ready for action.

3. He asked me to get out of his way.

4. The teacher advised the students to make good use of their time.

5. My father advised me not to count my chickens before they were hatched.

6. My doctor asked me to take four capsules a day.

7. My father asked me not to say anything to make her angry.

8. My mother asked me not to put so many things in my pocket.

9. The policeman ordered the taxi driver to follow that car.

10. Mohan ordered the waiter to bring four sandwiches.

  Rewrite the following statements in indirect speech:

1.”We are moving into a new house,” my neighbour said.

2. “If it rains we will have to cancel the match,” the captain said.

3. “We shall go to the zoo,” Ashok said to his friend.

4. Hasan said to me, “I will see you tomorrow”.

5. “Those who have written the essay can go home,” the teacher said.

6. All my friends tell me, “You will be a great man one day.”

7. “I have been waiting for an hour,” complained Ashok.

8. My friend said, “You may take my bicycle if you like.”

9. “Your husband will soon be well.” Dr Sapru told Mrs. Rao.

10. “1 am going to Delhi on the 10th.” Harpreet said.

ANSWERS:

1. My neighbour said that they were moving into a new house.

2. The captain said that if it rained they would have to cancel the match.

3. Ashok told his friend that they would go to the zoo.

4. Hawn told me that he would see me the next day.

5. The teacher said that those who had written the essay could go home.

6. All my friends tell me that I will be a great man one day.

7. Ashok complained that he had been waiting for an hour.

8. My friend told me that I might take his bicycle if I liked.

9. Dr Sapru told Mrs. Ran that her husband would soon be well.

10. Harpreet said that he was going to Delhi on the 10th.
