International Relations

When India became independent in 1947, it was Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru who envisioned our foreign policy. The policy is based on the five principles of Panchsheel that find their basis in ‘PEACE’. For the past several decades, India has followed these principles. India believes in talks and not in aggression. It has strongly supported independence movements in other countries.

India has formal diplomatic relations with most nations of the world. India, with its fast-growing economy and a defence force to reckon with, has become a regional power. India has a growing international influence in a prominent voice in global affairs.

India has a long history of collaboration with several countries and is considered one of the leaders of the developing world. India has also played an important and influential role in several international organisations. India has actively participated in several UN Peace Keeping Missions and is seeking entry into the Security Council of the United Nations.

 India has had a tumultuous relationship with its immediate neighbour Pakistan. Despite historical, cultural and ethnic links between the two, relations have been plagued by years of mistrust and suspicion, the bone of contention being Kashmir. With the other neighbouring countries, India has trade links and peace pacts.

The newly elected Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has made extensive efforts to reach out to many more nations. With his eloquent speeches and magnetic personality, Modi has been able to weave his magic in developed countries like the USA and Australia.

India believes in cultivating such ties with other countries that will help both the countries in a variety of areas like trade, defence, sports and so on. In such symbiotic relations, India hopes to lead the world to peace, fraternity and prosperity.

With P.M. Narendra Modi at the helm of affairs, many tough decisions have been taken in the right direction. India did not sign the Global Arms Trade Treaty because it feels that it has weak provisions on terrorism.
