No inspector of the Food Supplies Department has ever visited the area to know the facts. People think that all the officials from top to bottom, are mixed up in this scandal. Only recently has our government become aware of the gravity of this problem. Various steps have been taken to keep the environment free from pollution. More attention is being paid to afforestation. The unauthorised felling of trees is being checked. Scientists are developing methods to minimise the effect of smoke let out by our autos and chimneys. In fact, environmental awareness is a social necessity. It is not only the duty of the government, but also a social responsibility of each and every individual to help in keeping the environment free from pollution. It is a service not only to oneself but also to the entire humanity.

Begging should be abolished by law. It should be made a punishable offence. The government should open asylums for those beggars who are really helpless. Able-bodied beggars should be forced to work. If they go without work, they must also go without food. We should have no sympathy for such impostors. We should not encourage them by giving alms. People can thus play a big role in ending this evil.

The City Corporation seems to be indifferent or helpless in this matter. They say that a dispute is going on with the Telegraph Department. But how is the common man concerned with this dispute? Why should he be made to suffer for no fault of his?
The Corporation authorities should take the necessary measures to get the road repaired as early as possible. It gives a very ugly look and is also a danger to the life and limb of the road-users.

city has made it very crowded and cramped. The streets have become narrower and- all open spaces have disappeared. The increasing consumption of electricity and water have made them very scarce. Their inadequate supply has made living conditions very unpleasant and unhealthy. Most of the people living in the city belong to the salaried or the labour class. While their income has remained almost the same, the prices have gone up manifold. All this has adversely affected their standard of living. Added to all this, there is the problem of pollution due to the exhaust fumes of numberless autos plying on the city roads day and night. The problem has reached such alarming proportions that immediate remedial measures will have to be taken to save the city from a major catastrophe. Some of the suggestions in this regard are —
(i)New spacious colonies should be developed at the outskirts of the city.
(ii) The supply of water and electricity should be adequately increased in proportion to their demand.
(iii) Steps should be taken to control the prices of goods of everyday use.
(iv) Standards of pollution control should be strictly implemented on all sources that generate pollution.
(v) Last but not least, the authorities concerned must develop a sense of social responsibility.
