Glossary of Grammatical Terms

‘G’

1. Gender. A feature of personal pronouns and certain nouns that distinguishes masculine (he), feminine (she), and neuter (it). Nouns with gender distinctions include waiter, waitress, actor, actress, girl, boy, man, woman, ewe, ram.

2. Genitive case. The Latin term for a possessive case.

3. Gerund.  An -ing verb functioning as a nominal: “I enjoy jogging “Running is good exercise.”

4. Gerund phrase.  A gerund together with all of its complements and modifiers.

5. Grammatical. Usage that conforms to the rules that native speakers follow or that native speakers would find acceptable in a given situation. See also Ungrammatical

Glossary of Grammatical Terms

‘H’

1. Headword.  The word that fills the noun slot in the noun phrase: “the little boy across [the street].” The verb is the headword of the verb phrase; the proposition is the headword of the prepositional phrase.

2. Hedging.  A met discourse signal that helps readers interpret the writer’s degree of certainty: perhaps, possibly, might, seems, etc.

3. Helping verb. See Auxiliary.

4. Heteronyms.  Words that are spelt the same but differ in both meaning and pronunciation: bass/bass; wound/wound; Polish/polish.

5. Homonyms.  Words and morphemes that have the same sound and the same spelling but have different meanings: saw/saw; farmer/ brighter.

6. Homophones.  Words that have the same sound, but with both different meanings and different spellings: sale /sail; to Iwo / two.
