Ans. The lawyer’s (the narrator) work was not to prepare legal briefs but to serve the summons. So, he went to New Mullion to serve a summons on a man named Oliver Lutkins. Oliver Lutkins was needed as a witness in a legal case. Before going there, the lawyer had formed a romantic picture of this country town. He was disappointed as it was not a sweet and simple country village but had narrow muddy streets and unpainted wooden shops.
Q2. Who befriends him? Where does he take him?
Ans. At the station, the lawyer was impressed with a person who called himself Bill. He was a hack driver and claimed that he saw Oliver Lutkins only an hour ago. Clever Bill manipulated his visits around the town in such a friendly way so as not to make the lawyer suspicious of his planning. He took him to Fritz’s. Then, he took to him to Gustaf’s and Gray’s barber shops. And finally, Bill took him to Oliver Lutkins’ terrible mother at her farm. Everywhere it was told that they had missed Oliver only by a few hours.

Ans. Bill told the narrator that he saw Oliver Lutkins only an hour ago. He was a hard fellow to be caught as he was always up to something or other. He was probably trying to start a poker game in the back of Fritz’s shop. He was not really bad but it was hard to make him part with his money. Lutkins’s mother was a terrible huge woman who was quick as a cat.

Bill, being Oliver Lutkins himself, tried to befool him by being friendly and creating confidence in the lawyer. Ans. Lutkins is a very clever and cunning hack driver. First of all, he befriends the lawyer and wins his confidence. The lawyer is made to believe that he can’t search Oliver Lutkins without Bill’s help and guidance. Being outwitted, the lawyer allows himself to be a mere puppet in the hands of Bill. No doubt, he openly takes the lawyer all over the village. It sounds very strange that no one in the village lets out the secret. The moment Bill (Lutkins) comes to know that the lawyer has come to serve a summons on him in a legal case, he makes a plan to befool him. The hack driver asks the lawyer (the narrator) to keep out of sight behind him when they go into Fritz’s. Fritz is made to tell a lie. Lutkins (Bill) is a great manipulator and he manipulates the whole tour in such a way that no one tells the lawyer the truth. The same pattern is repeated when they go to Gustaf’s and to other places. The secret is out when the lawyer’s companion recognises Lutkins who had falsely befriended the lawyer as Bill.
Q3. Why do you think Lutkins’ neighbours were anxious to meet the lawyer?
Ans. When summons was issued, Lutkins and his mother laughed at the narrator as if he were a boy of seven. He begged the lawyer to accompany them to a neighbour for a cup of coffee. Lutkins told that the whole village knew how gullible and foolish he was. Only one of his neighbours missed meeting such a gullible person likes him. Lutkins’ tone was sarcastic and insulting.
Q4. After his first day’s experience with the hack-driver, the lawyer thinks of returning to New Mullion to practise law. Do you think he would have reconsidered this idea after his second visit?
Ans. In comparison to his hectic and violent city life, the lawyer finds New Mullion a very good place to practise law. First of all, he thinks of Bill. He finds him a true human being. He is so friendly and cooperative. No doubt, they fail to trace Oliver Lutkins. Bill can’t be blamed for his failure. At least, he made every honest effort in hunting for Lutkins. He finds New Mullion full of honest and human persons. He thinks of leading an honest and happy life in New Mullion. Naturally, he would have reconsidered this idea after his second visit. He would have realised that New Mullion is full of crooks and cunning people like Bill and his acquaintances. After the exposure of the whole drama that Bill enacted to befool him, the lawyer would have dropped the idea of going to New Mullion again.
Q5. Do you think the lawyer was gullible? How could he have avoided being taken for a ride? (CBSE Outside Set-II, 2015)
Ans. Certainly, the lawyer was gullible. He behaved not like a mature and seasoned lawyer. Actually, he proved himself just a novice who could be outwitted and outmanoeuvred by clever and cunning people like Oliver Lutkins and his terrible mother. He behaved like a seven-year-old boy before a seasoned crook like Bill (Lutkins). Yes, the lawyer could have avoided himself from being taken for a ride. He should have done his spade work more thoroughly before leaving for New Mullion. He should have sought more information from his companion who had already worked with Lutkins. He should have kept the purpose of his visit a secret not to be shared by anyone. The lawyer allowed himself to be a puppet in the hands of Lutkins. He gave him time and space to befool him by misguiding him at every step. The lawyer’s gullibility helped Lutkins to make every move that would outwit and befool him. So easily did he believe in Bill that he allowed himself to be taken for a ride.

Ans.No, we don’t come across characters like Lutkins only in fiction. On the other hand, we come across such clever and cunning crooks in the real like so often. This world is full of simple and gullible persons like the lawyer of the story. They become easy victims of such crooks. Their way of working is very simple. First of all, they try to win the confidence of such innocent and gullible persons by befriending them. Then they outwit and outmanoeuvre them for their own interests. This world is full of Natwarlals and Charles Sobhrajs. You often read in newspapers how a crook made crores of rupees by floating fake and fraudulent companies.
My next door neighbour had such a bad experience. One fine morning, a well-dressed gentleman befriended him. He presented a very tempting investment plan for a company. He assured that my neighbour would get a compounded 50% interest on his investment every year. After a few years, it came to light that the company was totally fake and the well-dressed gentleman was just a fraud and a seasoned crook. No doubt, the company was sealed and the crook was arrested. However, my gullible neighbour lost a few lakhs of rupees. It was a reward for his gullibility and greed.

Ans. A ‘con man’, or a confidence trickster is a seasoned crook who makes you believe blindly in what he does or says. He will have a tight grip over your nerves and brain. He will make you just his puppet and you start dancing to his tunes. You realise rather very late how much your gullibility has cost you. But that time, the damage has been done and you are left with nothing but licking your wounds. In the story, Oliver Lutkins is such ‘a con’ or a ‘confidence trickster’. He over smarts and outwits the gullible lawyer. The lawyer’s gullibility allows a crook like Oliver Lutkins to befool him like a seven-year-old boy. The whole drama is enacted to befool and misdirect the lawyer who has come to serve a summons on Lutkins.
