 This is a humorous poem. The poem gives readers a great sense of reading the language in poetry and is a dialogue between a good Duck and friendly Kangaroo. The Duck requests the Kangaroo to give him a ride on his back, but the Kangaroo wants some time to think about the offer. The Duck shares all of his thoughts openly, then they enjoy a ride around the world three times.

Paraphrasing of the lesson- The Duck And The Kangaroo

STANZA MEANING
Said the Duck to the Kangaroo,

“Good gracious! how you hop!

Over the fields and the water too,

As if you never would stop!

My life is a bore in this nasty pond,

And I long to go out in the world beyond!

 I wish I could hop like you!”

Said the Duck to the Kangaroo.

The Duck praised the Kangaroo about the way he hops over fields and water. She also said that his joy had no end but her life was boring in the nasty pond. Besides, she had already spent half of her life. Now her desire was only to hop like her friend, the Kangaroo.

“Please give me a ride on your back!”

Said the Duck to the Kangaroo.

“I would sit quite still, and say nothing but `Quack,

The whole of the long day through!

And we’d go to the Dee, and the Jelly Bo Lee,

Over the land, and over the sea;

Please take me a ride! 0 do!”

Said the Duck to the Kangaroo.

Said the Kangaroo to the Duck,

“This requires some little reflection;

Perhaps, on the whole, it might bring me luck,

And there seems but one objection,

Which is, if you’ll let me speak so bold,

Your feet are unpleasantly wet and cold,

And would probably give me the roo-Matiz!” said the Kangaroo.

The Duck requested the Kangaroo to give a ride on his back. She also assured her friend that except ‘Quack’, she would do nothing. They — the Duck and the Kangaroo — would go to the see and the Jelly Bo Lee as well as over the land and sea. Repeatedly, the Duck requested the Kangaroo to give her a ride.

The Kangaroo replied that he needed some time for reflection. Perhaps her idea was good because it could bring luck for their friendship. But the unpleasant wet and cold web of the Duck was the problem for him. Probably he could not feel comfortable with them.

Said the Duck, “As I sat on the rocks,

 I have thought over that completely,

And I bought four pairs of worsted socks

Which fit my web-feet neatly.

And to keep out the cold I’ve bought a cloak,

And every day a cigar I’ll smoke,

All to follow my own dear true Love of a Kangaroo!”

The Duck said that sitting on the rocks she deeply thought over the problem. She had found a solution. She had bought four pairs of worsted socks to fit her web-feet healthy. Moreover, she had also bought a cloak to keep her out of the cold. She would smoke a cigar every day to please her friend — the Kangaroo. The Duck assured her friend that she would follow her orders like a true friend.
Said the Kangaroo, “I’m ready!

All in the moonlight pale;

But to balance me well, dear

Duck, sit steady!

And quite at the end of my tail!”

So away they went with a hop and a bound,

And they hopped the whole world three times round;

And who so happy — 0 who, As the Duck and the Kangaroo?

The Kangaroo accepted the proposal and decided to set on the world tour in the moonlight. He also directed the Duck to sit quietly at the end of his tail. Then, they hopped the whole world three times. At the end of their tour, they were very happy and excited.

 Short and Simple Summary of the lesson in English- THE DUCK AND THE KANGAROO / Summary in simple Words/ Critical appreciation of the lesson – THE DUCK AND THE KANGAROO

One day, a meeting takes place between a Duck and Kangaroo. The Duck praises the Kangaroo for his hopping ability, saying he lives in a nasty pond and his life is boring. He desires to go out in the world; he promises not to move or make any noise. The Kangaroo agrees to take him on his back if he can ride without moving or making any noise.

 The Kangaroo says that he is willing but before this, he requires some reflection. He tells the Duck that he lives all the time in the water. His feet are so wet and cold that if he sits on his back he might catch the disease of roomatiz.

The Duck says that the Kangaroo doesn’t need to worry about this issue. He says that he has four pairs of woollen socks and his feet are always warm. He also has a cloak to keep himself warm.

The Kangaroo agrees to give the Duck a ride and asks him to sit at the end of his tail. They go on a riding programme and they go round the world three times.

Summary of the lesson- The Duck And The Kangaroo(2)

A Duck living in a pond becomes fascinated with the hopping abilities of the Kangaroo. She compares her dull life in the silly pond with the unending hopping of the Kangaroo over fields and water. The Duck expresses a deep desire to go to the far off world with the Kangaroo.

A Duck asks a Kangaroo to take it for a ride on his back. The Duck promises that it will sit very still throughout the day and not say anything except “Quack quack”. It wants to travel over land and sea. It particularly wants to visit Dee and Jelly Bo Lee, which are places that it finds fascinating.

The Kangaroo responds to this request and says that the idea is not bad, but they need to think it over because it might bring him luck. He then raises an objection, which is that the Duck’s feet are wet and cold, and that might make him fall sick and give him rheumatism, a disease that causes stiffness and pain in joints. The Duck offers to solve this problem by carrying four pairs of well-fitting woollen socks to cover her web-feet neatly. She adds that she will smoke a cigar every day and will also bring a cloak to keep the cold away. The Kangaroo agrees to start the journey in a pale moon-light night. He instructs the Duck to sit still on the tip of his tail so that his balance is not shaken. They both start their trip, hopping around the world thrice. This adventure makes them happy and close.

Long Answer Type Questions of the lesson- The Duck And The Kangaroo

Q1. How was the Duck able to leave her ‘nasty pond’ and do away with the boredom of her life?

Ans:-

The Duck didn’t hop like a Kangaroo, but she still wanted to go explore the world. She had seen that the Kangaroos were hopping around and having fun and was upset that she couldn’t do it too. But then she thought of a plan and tried to ask him to take her with him. The Duck knew that he would probably say no because of her wet feet, so she came up with some excuses in advance. For protection from cold, the Duck purchased four pairs of worsted socks. Kangaroo is wearing them to ensure him not contracting rheumatism. When she expressed apprehension about undertaking a journey with him as well, Duck offered solution. The last two set out on a journey around the world. And so, the Duck left her boring little pond and went to live with the Kangaroo. Leaving their home three times, they became the happiest pair of all.

Q2. What apprehension did the Kangaroo have about the Duck’s proposed ride? How does he convey this apprehension? How does the Duck allay his fear?

Ans:-The Kangaroo was prone to bouts of rheumatism, a disease that causes stiffness, inflammation and pain in joints. When the Duck requested him to take her on a ride, he was a bit apprehensive and reluctant because her wet feet could increase chances of his getting rheumatism. He was frank and outspoken, so he did not mince his words while conveying his apprehension to the Duck. However, before objecting to the Duck’s proposal, he admitted that it could bring him luck. Still, he considered the entire matter carefully and told the Duck firmly but politely that her feet were unpleasantly wet which could probably give him the ‘roo-Matiz’. On her part, the clever and farsighted Duck had already foreseen the hurdle and had kept four pairs of worsted woollen socks ready to keep her feet dry and warm.

 Q3. What values can you draw from the poem “The Duck and the Kangaroo”?

 Ans:-The poem teaches us the values of generosity and humility in winning own friends and finding happiness. Those who are generous in acknowledging and appreciating the capabilities of others gain a lot in life. Admiration and politeness are positive values that make others comfortable. These qualities help to win good friends and make life very happy and enjoyable. The Duck and the Kangaroo, both are very polite and courteous with each other. The Duck acknowledges the Kangaroo’s hopping skills and offers generous admiration. This wins the Kangaroo’s heart and he gives serious thought to the Duck’s request. He puts forth his objection in a very polite manner and accepts the Duck’s solution humbly. Mutual respect and politeness help them to not only enjoy each other’s company but also fulfil the Duck’s desire to leave her boring pond and venture out into the world.

Q4. Both the Duck and the Kangaroo are very sensitive creatures. Elucidate.

Ans:-

The Duck and the Kangaroo are both very sensitive creatures, who both face struggles dealing with problems such as monotony in their lives. The Duck makes a rational decision to try to break out of her boredom by asking the Kangaroo to help get her out into the wide world so she can have some more adventures. The Kangaroo is sensible, too. He takes time to consider Duck’s request before blurting out an objection. The Duck displays her cleverness and farsightedness when she mentions that she already has a solution to the Kangaroo’s concern. The Kangaroo and Duck enjoy each other’s company, which removes boredom from the Duck’s life. The sensible decision also brings luck to the Kangaroo.

Q5. What idea do you form about the Kangaroo after reading the poem?

Ans:-The Kangaroo is an energetic creature who loves adventure and fun. Though he has a helpful attitude, he is sensible enough not to harm his own interest while offering help. That is why he very frankly but politely tells the Duck the reason for his reluctance to take her on a trip. He is very cautious and practical. He believes in taking precautions in advance to avoid trouble. Hence apart from making sure that the wet and cold feet of the duck will bring him no harm, he gives instructions in advance to the Duck to sit steadily on the tip of his tail so that he might not lose balance. The Kangaroo shapes up as a straightforward creature that is polite but firm in his dealings. Once he makes a commitment, he keeps it. Thus, his frankness and honesty win over the Duck’s heart and both he and the Duck thoroughly enjoy the ride.

Q6. Bring out the humour in the poem “The Duck and the Kangaroo”.

Ans:-The Duck and the Kangaroo” is a Nonsense Verse and is full of humorous elements. The basic structure of the poem is a conversation between a Duck and a Kangaroo which is very amusing. The honest manner in which the Duck pays compliments to the Kangaroo for his hopping skills makes the reader smile. The imaginary names, ‘Dee and Jelly Bo Lee’, given to places that the Duck wishes to visit sound very funny. Distorting rheumatism to ‘roo-Matiz’ adds another funny element to the poem. The thoughtful manner in which the Kangaroo considers the Duck’s proposal is comical too. The Kangaroo’s objection to the Duck’s cold and wet feet and the Duck’s solution through the use of worsted socks, cloak and cigar tickle the reader’s ribs. Thus, the humour is subtle but well-woven in the fabric of the poem.

Q7. Why does the Duck appreciate Kangaroo’s hopping?

 Ans. As a matter of fact, the Duck wants to have a ride on the Kangaroo’s back. The Duck lives in a nasty pond and gets bored. She also wants to enjoy the beauty of the world. But she knows that she cannot go beyond the pond. When she sees the Kangaroo hopping on the land, she thinks how lucky the Kangaroo is that he can go anywhere on the land and enjoy the beauty of the world. She appreciates the Kangaroo’s hoping to make her happy and then requests him to let her sit on her back and visit the beautiful world. Due to her sweetness and politeness, the Kangaroo allows her to sit at the end of his tail. Though the Kangaroo tells the Duck to sit steady and quiet still so that he would not lose his balance.

Q8. “Our politeness and humility compel others to accept our request.” Do you agree with this statement? Write your answer with reference to the poem ‘The Duck and the Kangaroo’.

Ans. It is absolutely true that our politeness and humility compels others to accept our request. As we read in the poem that the Duck politely requests the Kangaroo to make her visit the beautiful world and the Kangaroo accepts her request. So, if we want to get our work done by others, we have to be polite and humble to them. We cannot get any work done forcefully. If we force someone to do some work, he/she would do that work reluctantly and hence the work would not be perfect. So, we should always request somebody politely to get our work done. But remember, if someone does our work, we should feel grateful to him/her and be ready to help him/ her as well.

Q9. Our ability to convince others helps us to achieve our goals. Explain how the Duck convinces the Kangaroo to tour the world.

 Ans. When the Duck proposes to the Kangaroo for a world tour, the Kangaroo is hesitant. The Kangaroo feels that it may get rheumatism because of the wet and cold feet of the Duck. But the Duck assures that she will wear socks and a cloak to keep herself warm. The Duck would sit still and say nothing but ‘Quack’. Further, the Duck says that they can see so many places around the world. So the Duck was able to convince the Kangaroo that a world tour will be of great joy.

As the income of my uncle is meagre he politely requested me to teach his daughter. I became impressed with his manner and assured him that I would teach mathematics to his daughter.
