Aadhar is a unique identification number which is issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), an agency of the Planning Commission of India. The agency was established in February 2009. The main aim of this agency is to provide a unique identification number to all persons residing in India, but not identity cards. The agency will maintain a database of residents containing biometric and other data.
