MLA Full Form, Abbreviation & Meaning

MLA is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district to the Legislature of a State in the Indian System of government. Each state has seven to nine MLAs for every MP (Member of Parliament) in the Lok Sabha. MLAs are elected based on the adult franchise which states that every citizen of India who attains the age of 18 has the right to vote without any discrimination based on sex, religion, and race.

Qualification –

The qualification to become a member of the State Legislative Assembly is as follows –

  • The person appearing for the post of MLA should be a citizen of India and should have not less than 25 years of age.
  • The person is only eligible for the post of an MLA if he/she is a voter from any constituency of the State.

Term –

The term of the State Legislative Assembly is for a period of five years. But it can even be dissolved earlier by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The term can also be extended more than five years but not exceeding more than six months at a time. The term of each MLA is six years and 1/3 members of the House retire after every two years.
