Direct and Indirect Speech Narration Exercise No. 7 & 8

EXERCISE -7

Change the narration in the following sentences:

1. Mohan said, “I will not go now.”

2. He said to me, “You can go now.”

3. Sohan said, “I shall go to Delhi today.”

4. He said, “Mohan will meet you tomorrow.”

5. Mohan said to me, “I lost my pen last night.”

6. Ram said, “These books are nice.

7. Radha said, “My brother came here last week.”

8. I said to him, “You can take this book.”

9. Ratan said to me, “We shall go to Mumbai next week.”

10. My brother said, “I saw a film yesterday.”

ANSWERS:

1.Mohan said that he would not go then.

2. He told me that I could go then.

3. Sohan said that he would go to Delhi that day.

4. He said that Mohan would meet you the next day.

5. Mohan told me that he had lost his pen the previous night.

6. Ram said that those books were nice.

7. Radha said that her brother had come there the previous week.

8. I told him that he could take that book.

9. Ratan told me that we should go to Mumbai next week.

10.My brother said that he had seen a film the previous day.

EXERCISE -8

 Rewrite the following sentences in indirect speech :

1. Mr Rao said to his wife, “I may be late for dinner. Don’t wait for me.”

2. “Raju,” said Raju’s mother, “don’t tell lies. Tell me the truth.”

3. The captain said to the soldiers, “Don’t fall back. Keep firing and advancing.”

4. The Gita says, “Do your duty. Don’t worry about the results of your actions.”

5. “Don’t argue with your father,” Mrs Das said to her son.

6. “Grow a beard and no one will know who you are,” my friend advised me.

7. “Taste a little of this. Fell nit if I have added too much salt,” she said to her daughter.

8. “Don’t talk loudly. You will disturb the baby,” my aunt said.

9. “Be careful. The steps are slippery,” my friend said.

10. “Get me some paper and a pen,” my father said to me.

 ANSWERS:

1.Mr Rao told his wife that he might be late for dinner and asked her not to wait for him.

2. Raju’s mother asked Raju not to tell lies and to tell her the truth.

3. The captain ordered the soldiers not to fall back and to keep firing and advancing.

4. The Gita advises us to do our duty and not to worry about the results of our actions.

5. Mrs Das asked her son not to argue with his father.

6. My friend advised me to grow a beard and no one would know who I was.

7. She asked her daughter to taste a little of that and tell her if she had added too much salt.

8. My aunt told me not to talk loudly as I would disturb the baby.

9.  My friend advised me to be careful as the steps were slippery.

10. My father asked me to get some paper and a pen.
