You are Kamakshi / Kuber. You have been selected to represent your school in an All India Inter School Debate Competition organized by the Rotary Club Bangalore (South). The topic for the debate is: ‘In the opinion of this house Value-Based Education is the only remedy for decreasing the crime rate amongst the educated folk.’ Write an article in not more than 200 words for or against the motion, giving arguments for your stand.

Ans:-                REMEDY FOR DECREASING THE CRIME RATE AMONGST EDUCATED FOLK

During recent years there has been an alarming increase in the crime rate among educated folk. Every day we hear of educated youth involved in such crimes as eve-teasing, pocket-picking, thieving, lifting, robbing people and even killing them. That an uneducated rustic should commit a crime is something understandable, but what is the use of education if even an educated person indulges in unlawful and criminal acts? It only means that there has been something gravely wrong with the education of such folk. Their education has provided them facts but not ideas, knowledge but not wisdom, ability but not morality. The only remedy to my mind lies in making our system of education value-based. Students must be given moral education along with their formal education. They must be given lessons in the basic values of life — like honesty, truthfulness, love, patience, tolerance, co-operation, etc. — so that they become good, useful and law-abiding citizens when they grow up.

Last, of all, it would not be out of place to mention that the teacher must act as a role model because — as Gandhi said — it is possible for a teacher situated even miles away to affect the spirit of his pupils by his way of living. Thank you.

You are Sangeeta / Sohail. You have been selected to represent your school in an All India Debate Competition organized by National Children’s Club, Delhi. The topic for the debate is ‘In the opinion of this house minimization of human wants is the only way to cleanse society of all kinds of corruption.’ Write an article in not more than 200 words for or against the motion, giving arguments for your stand.

Ans:-                            HUMAN WANTS AND RESULTANT CORRUPTION

The present-day race for money and material things are the results of man’s putting no limit to his wants. As human wants an increase, the wherewithal to satisfy them has also to be sought. And when we can’t find it by fair means, we start taking resort to unfair ones. In other words, we can say that all the corrupt practices in the materialistic world of today are due to the infinite multiplicity of man’s wants. So all talk of rooting out corruption from society and any attempt to check it will prove futile if a man does not put a check on his wants. Having no wants is divine, but it is not possible that a man who is an earthy being should have no wants. But it is certainly possible for him to put a check on his superfluous wants. ‘Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty,’ said the great philosopher Socrates and he added that ‘the fewer our wants the nearer we resemble gods.’ So to my mind, this world which is caught and writhing in the cogwheels of corruption can be turned into a paradise if we only minimize our wants. The mad rat race for money will then automatically come to an end and society will get cleansed of all kinds of corruption.

143. Class 9 & 10 Short Essay and Article on : The Cruel Practice of Using Animals In Circus Shows

The other day you went with your friends to a Russian circus, famous for its extraordinary animal shows. Though you went there to enjoy yourself you returned home highly disturbed. You felt miserable at the cruel ways and methods used at the circus to make the animals perform antics and dangerous feats. You decide to write an article against the institution of the circus for publication in a newspaper. Write the article in not more than 200 words.

Ans:-                            THE CRUEL PRACTICE OF USING ANIMALS IN CIRCUS SHOWS

The primary goal of any circus is to entertain and excite people of all ages. Performers in a circus display feats of physical skill, courage and talent. But nowadays most circuses have included animals also as performers. They keep most of these animals in cages and bring them out at the time of performance in the ring. The poor animals are deprived of their natural freedom and their sylvan habitat. To me, it appears to be the worst form of cruelty. Captivating wild animals and using them as a means of entertainment is a sin against the Creator who had created these animals to live a free life in the wild. And I don’t think there is any entertainment in watching an elephant drink soda from a bottle or a lion jump through a ring of fire. The poor animals don’t feel any pleasure or satisfaction while performing these acts. It is the ring master’s whip that makes them perform out of fear. The animals are starved and whipped mercilessly during the period of training, and it is this fear of whip which makes them dance to the tune of the ring master’s signal. This cruel practice needs to be stopped and no circus should be allowed to hold shows if it includes animals as performers.

The other day you went to a local Public School for admission of your nephew to their K.G. Class. On contacting the Admission in charge of the school you were shocked to learn that the admission test was merely a formality. The admission was to be granted not based on the merit of the child but on the parents’ capacity to pay a fat capitation fee to the school. You felt extremely upset over this educational evil. You decide to write an article on this exploitation of parents by some of the private schools to be published in The Times of India. Your article should not exceed 200 words.

Ans:-                                        A GLARING EDUCATIONAL EVIL

It is very shocking and surprising that some of the Private Schools in cities have been exploiting the innocent parents mischievously by getting huge amounts of donations in the name of the school building or something else.

The other day I went to a local Public School for admission of my nephew to their K.G. Class. On contacting the Admission in a change of the school I felt extremely upset to learn that the admission test was merely a formality The admission was to be granted not based on the merit of the child but on I parents’ capacity to pay a fat capitation fee to the school. This is, of course, simply loot. The Government should check such practices from such a pious field as education. If possible, the Government should ban anything extra other than the fee and other school charges. At the same time, it is the duty of the parents also not to submit to such unjustified demands of any Public School. Further, the case should be taken up by the Parent-Teacher Organisations. In this way, this evil will be eradicated.

Ans:                                         LIFE IN A BIG CITY

Life in big cities is very fast, busy and devoid of peace. The atmosphere is noisy and suffocating. The roads and streets are crowded and unsafe. Life in a big city is artificial, mechanical and materialistic. We cannot enjoy the beauties of nature in a city as we can in a village. City life is extremely unhealthy. The smoke coming out of factory-chimneys makes the atmosphere dirty. People get no opportunity to breathe fresh and pure air. Food in big cities is adulterated. We cannot get pure milk, ghee and other eatables. Life is very costly. Rents and fares are very high. Modern cities are very crowded. Much time is wasted in going from one place to another. City people do not have any fellow-feeling. They are very selfish and self–centred they have no peace of mind. They do not lead a contented life. Ans:-                                        THE MOSQUITO MENACE

Come monsoons, come mosquitoes! If monsoons bring us pleasant relief from the scorching heat of the summer, they also bring up mosquitoes that not only suck our blood but also give us a painful itching. These little impish creatures keep themselves hidden during the day and start invading in swarms as soon as the night falls. They make it literally impossible to sleep in the open. And those who do have to keep their bodies covered from head to foot. The richer ones put mosquito nets around their beds, but if somehow even one mosquito gets into the net it is enough to give one sleepless night. Mosquitoes force people to shut themselves up in their bedrooms even on hot summer nights. But the clever mosquito creeps in there also. People have to adopt different measures to save themselves from this terrible enemy. They switch on their electric fans at full speed so that the mosquito is not able to stand the strong current of air. People also use various kinds of mosquito repellents which can be in the form of some cream, spray or smoky substance. Nowadays we have some electrical devices also to ward off the mosquitoes. But with every new repellent that man discovers, the mosquito to seem to grow stronger, bolder and cleverer.

You are a member of the Environment Club of your School. After visiting many places you have realised that it is the need of the hour to protect our environment. Write an article on this topic to create awareness among the people.

Ans:-                            ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION — NEED OF THE HOUR

Environmental pollution is the defiling of our land, air and water. It is the biggest problem in the modern world. It is a problem in which the guilty and the innocent suffer alike. It knows no national barriers or differences of caste and religion. The development of science and technology has made our lives very comfortable, but it has also resulted in a fearful population explosion. As a result, our cities have become over-crowded, and their atmosphere has become polluted. The growth of big industries has led to terrible pollution of air, earth and water. Trees and forests which can maintain the environmental balance have been cut down to meet the increasing needs of man. Wildlife is also fast dying out because of deforestation. The ecological balance has been disturbed beyond measure. We have turned the world into a big gas chamber. If this state of affairs is allowed to continue, very soon no life would be left on this planet. The only solution lies in environmental protection through nature conservation. It means telling fishermen that they are catching too many fish. It means telling poor farmers in the tropics that they are chopping down too many trees. It means telling people everywhere that they should use natural resources without destroying them. In other words, they should replace in nature whatever they takeout from it. In fact, environmental awareness is a social necessity. It is not only the duty of the government, but also a social responsibility of each and every individual to help in keeping the environment free from pollution: It is a service not only to oneself but also to the entire humanity.

We must hold time by its forelocks. Time and tide wait for none. Time once gone can never be recalled or recollected. Only repentance remains. Do not put off till tomorrow what you can do today. To avail oneself of the opportunity one has to be vigilant and all alert. Time is miserly. We must utilize it to the best of our capabilities. Taking hints from the above lines write an article on the ‘Importance of Time’.

Ans.                                                     IMPORTANCE OF TIME

Time never stays stationary. Moments once allowed to slip unutilized will never return. We should remain vigilant and utilize the present moments. Who knows what is there in the womb of the future. Tomorrow never comes, and it is always today. Tomorrow is uncertain. So whatever you want to do, you must do that in the present. Time knocks at the door but only once, and if that opportunity is lost, everything is lost. A student who says that there are still many days left for the test might have to face failure. The policy of postponement invariably leads to loss and defeat. Time and tide wait for none. Those who are not watchful have to repent but repentance is no remedy. Life is very short. If you know the importance of time and respect time, time will respect you.

Education is not an end but a means to an end. Education must teach us to respect physical labour whereas it makes us shun and hate labour. Education in itself cannot build a perfect nation as it is thought to be. The work of a farmer is far more important than that of a professor. Real education tells us that all jobs are necessary for society. Basing yourself on the views expressed in the foregoing lines, write an article on ‘Real Education’.

Ans.                                                     REAL EDUCATION

Education is not an end but a means to an end. An educated man hates manual work. A degree holder prefers to die than to carry a burden on his head. Then what is the use of such education? The purpose of education is to make people fit for life but in reality today it makes them a misfit for life. Leaders think they can build a nation by educating one and all. They are sadly mistaken. Education itself cannot make a nation perfect. We should realise that the work of a professor is not more important than that of a farmer. We can do without education but we will die without food. If sweepers do not sweep, we would get terrible diseases. Real education makes us do a job suited to our brain and ability and realise that all jobs are necessary to society. Education that teaches the dignity of labour is a real education.

Ans:-                                        APING THE WESTERN CULTURE

It is now more than fifty years when the British left our country and we became a free nation. But sadly the west still dominates our way of life and thinking. The younger generation apes everything that is typical of western culture. They ape their fashions in dress, their music, dances and even their habits, of food. By doing so, they think they can give an impression of being modern. But to me, the fact is quite the opposite. By aping western culture, they do nothing but give an impression of being thick-headed clowns. They have gone so crazy for the western styles that they have forgotten all about their own culture and traditions. They don’t know what Holi or Diwali is about but they know all about Valentine’s Day. They would hardly ever visit a temple, but would never miss visiting a bar or coffee house. They prefer fast and junk foods to fresh and pure foods cooked at home. ‘Hellos’ and ‘Byes’ have taken the place of respectful ‘Namaste’. In the name of liberalism and modernism, all sense of shame and decency has been thrown to the winds. The younger generation must remember that the sun (the symbol of all light and knowledge) rises in the east and sets in the west.

You are ABC of Class XII. Recently you have spent a week in the rural setting near Cochin, Kerala. You enjoyed your stay. Write an article describing the joy of living in the lap of nature.

Ans:-                                        THE JOY OF LIVING IN THE LAP OF NATURE

Recently I spent a week in the rural setting near Cochin which is in the state of Kerala. I had gone there at the invitation of one of my acquaintances. It was a tiny village near the seashore. Living here was a unique experience for me. It was like living in the lap of nature. The rural setting of this place had a charm of its own. The tall palm trees growing all around, the pleasant breeze coming from the sea, the fishermen singing joyfully while going to the sea, the village children building castles in the sand, the rising of the sun in the morning, and it’s going down in the seas in the west — all these scenes and sights had a charm of their own. The speed and dexterity with which the coconut-pickers would go up a palm tree was a sight to watch. Nature everywhere seemed to be at her best. Life here seemed to go at a leisurely pace. There was no trace of any hurry or worry on any face. There was joy everywhere and I drank of it to my heart’s content. These beautiful sights of nature gave me joy not only during the days of my stay among them but also gave a store of joy for future use. Now I can draw from this store whenever I sit alone and think of those pleasing sights.

Ans:-                                        SERVICE AND SACRIFICE

The year 200— was celebrated as the International Year of Volunteers. Our school arranged a special cultural programme in commemoration of this great event. ‘Service and Sacrifice’ was selected as the theme of this special programme. As part of this programme, a blood-donation camp, a free dental care camp and an eye-camp were organised in the school premises. All the money spent on arranging these camps was contributed by the staff and students of the school. A large number of people visited these camps. They were guided and helped by the student volunteers who wore on their shoulders the badges saying: ‘Service and Sacrifice’. The visitors were highly impressed by the spirit of service exhibited by the volunteers. The words “They serve God well, who serve His creatures” on the entry gate pleased every visitor. Apart from these camps, a great cultural show was organised in the school hall. There were competitions in dance, music, patriotic songs, mono-acting, etc. Each of the items highlighted the importance of service and sacrifice in life. The programme was on the whole very successful and was appreciated by all who attended it. The programme was presided over by the Education Minister who had a special word of praise for our school.
