(The following speech is perfect for 1 min. to 1.5 min)

The experts say that moods are emotions that tend to become fixed, influencing one’s outlook for hours, days or even weeks. That’s great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem if you are sad, anxious, angry or simply lethargic.

Modern pharmacology offers an abundance of tranquillizers, anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs, but they should be avoided.  There are many self-help techniques, aerobic exercises seem to be the most effective cure for a bad mood. Aerobic exercises such as running, cycling, brisk walking, swimming or other repetitive activities boost the heartbeat rate, increase the circulation of blood and improve the body’s utilization of oxygen. Just for 20 minutes, three to five times a week are just that you need. Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk to someone, dearest and the nearest. Sometimes, though; there is no one to listen to.

“Colour can be a nutrient for the mind as vitamins are for the body,” says Patricia, New York colour psychologist. She suggests keeping away from red to defuse irritability and anger. Avoid wearing colours that make you feel down—black or dark blue. Go for warm, bright and active colours that lighten your mood. Neutral colours such soft shades of blue have a soothing, calming effect and these alleviate anxiety and tension. There is a reported basic link between food and mood. Eating proteins tend to sustain alertness and mental energy. A strong connection has been found between high caffeine intake and increased depression, irritability and anxiety. People are often depressed when their thoughts are negative and distorted. If you avoid being critical of yourself and think positively, you are most likely to beat a bad mood.

Qu.1- As you said that tranquillizers, anti-depressants and anti-anxiety drugs should be avoided. Is there any specific reason for that?

Answer- There are several reasons for that as drugs are physically addictive, using drugs causes enormous disruption in the systems and biological processes of the body, especially in the chemistry of our brain. They degrade our health as well as reduce our work potential and there are so many other disadvantages also that’s why they should be completely neglected.

Qu. 2- According to you is depression inherited?

Answer- The evidence is overwhelming that major depression has a strong genetic component. The presence of depression in the adoptive family or of major life stressors is not as great a predictor of the development of depression as family history. A family history of depression makes you 2-5 times more likely to develop depression in yourself.
