The Aim of Education
(The following speech is perfect for 1 min. to 1.05 min)
The aim of education to train us to understand the eternal values to appreciate the supreme human virtue and the simple decencies of life. We must be educated not for cruelty and power but for love and kindness. We must foster the freedom of the mind, the humanity of the heart, the integrity, of the individual. It should be our effort to train human beings to love truth, beauty and goodness. A famous man in the middle ages asked in a Latin song, “Who will achieve universal peace”, and answered “The disciplined, the dedicated, the pure in the heart, and the gentle in the spirit.” No machinery which the art of man can devise will achieve this, unless there is behind it, is the proper temper of mind. To create and maintain that type of temper should be the aim of education in a civilized society. Plato had a clear vision of the goal and method of education. Though we may not understand all that we read by surrounding ourselves with the work of great minds, a touch of their greatness passes on to us.
Qu. You said that we must foster for the freedom of mind. What does it give us?
Ans. Freedom of mind gives us new thoughts. We cannot create new plans and generate new ideas unless we are free to think. And this should be the aim of education.
